The vital substance beta-carotene prepares winter-black skin for the sun's rays and at the same time represents a sunscreen. Because a healthy summer tan does not come by itself. People who only have a choice between sunburn and noble paleness in the summer due to their sensitive skin should therefore eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible because beta-carotene is abundant in them. To prepare for the sun, beta-carotene capsules, tablets or dragees are also suitable.

Beta carotene in food

Beta carotene belongs to the large group of carotenoids and is known for its many positive properties. The intake of beta-carotene in our body is very much dependent on how we offer it to the body. The vital substance is in yellow-orange, but also dark green fruits and vegetables like

  • carrots
  • peaches
  • mangos
  • apricots
  • spinach
  • Lamb's lettuce
  • chard

However, relatively little is absorbed from the raw fruits and vegetables because the plant cell walls hinder the release. For example, when eating raw carrots, only about 10 percent of beta-carotene is consumed. In rubbed form and along with fat however, the utilization increases considerably.

Beta carotene capsules as sunscreen

Even with beta-carotene tablets or capsules, the skin can be well prepared for the summer. As a precursor of vitamin A, beta-carotene has the special property of trapping free radicals and protecting the cells. A positive side effect results from the chemical structure of this vital substance: With its own color component, beta-carotene intensifies the natural skin tan and ensures a healthier and fresher appearance.

How does beta carotene work as a sunscreen?

The protective effects of beta-carotene are based primarily on its function as an antioxidant. The vital substance acts via two different mechanisms: On the one hand it makes harmless the reactive singlet oxygen, which is produced for example by UV irradiation. This could otherwise destroy cell structures by oxidation.

Beta-carotene absorbs the energy of the reactive oxygen and releases it as heat. This process is also referred to as "quenching", that is to say "erasing". On the other hand, beta-carotene can inhibit even existing lipid peroxidation itself by breaking off this chain reaction as a radical scavenger.

Effect of beta-carotene

Beta carotene serves the vitamin A supply of humans and is called therefore also as Provitamin A. In the enterocytes, it is converted to vitamin A, depending on demand, so that an overdose, even with high levels of beta-carotene, is not possible.

Vitamin A is responsible for growth and differentiation of cells and tissues and thus for the functioning of a healthy skin of great importance. It is equally conducive to the visual process. The beta-carotene, which is not needed for vitamin A production, is deposited in the fatty tissue and ultimately in the cells of the epidermis, where it can further develop its positive influences.

Taking beta-carotene capsules

Newly formed skin cells migrate to the outside, verhornen thereby and are finally repelled. As this process of skin regeneration takes three to four weeks, beta-carotene should be started at least one month before sun exposure. This ensures that sufficient carotene has been incorporated in the various skin layers. In this way, the skin's own protection against UV radiation is increased and the sunburn threshold is increased.
