  • Health Professions - A Brief History of Healthcare Professions

Most people think of the term "medical profession" in the field of work of the doctor. But in Germany there are other professional groups - some with, others without academic education. Here is a path through this health jungle.

explanation of Terms

Not everyone who recognizes, heals or relieves illnesses is a member of the health professions - after all, mothers often provide their child with small aches and pains themselves. On the other hand, professions such as the pharmacists or beauticians to whom one belongs are among the acknowledged health professions in Germany does not necessarily think spontaneously. So what exactly are health professionals?

The above description is an important pillar for the characterization of health care professions: these are professional activities that serve to identify, cure or alleviate illness or disability or provide preventive health care services. A distinction is made between the medical professions in the narrower sense, the academic health professions, and the health professions without academic training, which are also referred to as health professions or medical professions. The group of non-medical practitioners occupies a special position.

Academic health professions

These are characterized by a federally regulated university education, namely the doctor, dentist, veterinarian, pharmacist or psychotherapist (psychological psychotherapist, child and adolescent psychotherapist). The permission to practice the profession means approbation and is a mandatory requirement to work in the respective profession.

rules:
Training, admission and employment are regulated by federal and provincial laws. The Länder are responsible for the regulation of professional practice and further education. In some federal states the individual laws for academic health professions are summarized to a cure professional chamber law. Academic health professions are typically organized in public professional organizations ("chambers", such as the medical association) that regulate professional practice, professional representation and professional jurisdiction at the state level.

Services:
A doctor is entitled to perform all necessary and appropriate activities that must be in accordance with the medical standards and rules of the art of healing. In doing so, he is obliged to scrupulously check the dangers and risks as well as the alternatives and to inform the patient about his considerations and steps. Not with all such services, the costs are covered by the statutory health insurance, but quite a few must be paid as individual health services (IgeL) by the patient.
