Sea buckthorn - vitamin-rich all-rounder


As an alternative to hot lemon, you can try it on the next cold or cough with sea buckthorn. The small yellow sea buckthorn berries are true vitamin bombs and contain up to ten times as much vitamin C as lemons. Even three spoonfuls of sea buckthorn juice should cover the entire daily requirement of an adult for vitamin C. Outwardly, the sea buckthorn berry can also do wonders: sea buckthorn oil helps with sore, inflamed skin, protects against harmful UV radiation and is even used in chronic skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis.

Sea buckthorn: origin and processing

The bright yellow sea buckthorn berries grow on prickly bushes - preferably in harsh climates and loose calcareous sandy soil, on rocky slopes or on sand dunes. In Germany, sea buckthorn therefore occurs primarily in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, but also in the Black Forest. The career of the "Lemon of the North" began in the GDR, where tropical fruits were usually in short supply, so that the sea buckthorn represented an important source of vitamins.

Today, there are sea buckthorn as juice, mus, tea, syrup and many other forms in every health food store or health food store. As the berries are very sour, they are rarely consumed in their raw form. However, when gently pressed and processed with shell, most of the nutrients are retained by the sea buckthorn.

Sea Buckthorn: Vitamin B12 Supplier?

Sea buckthorn is one of the few plant foods that contain vitamin B12, which is usually found in meat. Thus, sea buckthorn is also often recommended as a B12 source for vegetarians and vegans, some of whom have a deficiency of this vitamin.

It should be noted, however, that seabuckthorn - influenced by fertilization and soil quality - often no longer contains vitamin B12. Sea Buckthorn is therefore not a reliable alternative to B12 supplements for vegetarians and especially for vegans.

Other nutrients of sea buckthorn

Sea buckthorn contains numerous healthy nutrients: In addition to the already mentioned vitamin C, sea buckthorn also offers a wealth of E, and A vitamins. Many vitamins are fat-soluble - conveniently, sea buckthorn provides the fat with it, allowing the body to directly process the nutrients.

The pulp of the seabuckthorn berry also contains minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium and manganese. All of these nutrients are in a few spoons of sea buckthorn juice or sea buckthorn mus.

The sea buckthorn juice should be drunk best in the ratio 1: 6 with water. Sea buckthorn juice also tastes good when mixed with a spoonful of honey in hot tea or apple juice.

Recipe: apple pie with sea buckthorn cream

For the dough:

  • 300 g of flour
  • 1 packet of baking soda
  • 150 g quark
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 100 ml sunflower oil
  • 80 g of sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 kg of apples
  • Sea buckthorn jam or buckthorn liqueur

For the sea-buckthorn cream:

  • 250 g curds
  • 100 ml of cream
  • 4 tablespoons of sea buckthorn juice
  • 1 tablespoon of orange juice
  • 2 packets of vanilla sugar
  • 4 tbsp oatmeal
  • 2 tbsp sugar

Sea-buckthorn recipe: preparation of the cake

Peel, core and slice the apples. Preheat the oven. Mix the flour with the baking powder and place in a bowl. Add cottage cheese, milk, oil, sugar, vanilla sugar and salt. Knead the ingredients to a dough with a hand mixer. Roll out the finished dough on a buttered baking tray. Cover the dough with the apple slices, spread a few blots of sea buckthorn jam (alternatively a few drops of sea buckthorn liqueur) between the apples and bake the cake at 180 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes.

In the meantime, whip the cream with the vanilla sugar. Smooth the quark with orange juice and sea buckthorn juice and fold in the cream. When the cake is ready to bake, allow to cool, spread the sea buckthorn juice cream over it and smooth. Finally, fry the oatmeal and sugar in a pan and sprinkle over the seabuckthorn juice.

Cosmetics: wonder drug sea buckthorn oil

Not only in the kitchen, but also in cosmetics, sea buckthorn is a true all-purpose weapon. The fat oil of the pulp and the seeds of the sea buckthorn juice pampers the skin and has a healing, anti-inflammatory effect.

A few drops of pure sea buckthorn oil on sore or inflamed skin stimulate the regeneration of skin cells and support wound healing. Also with acne or atopic dermatitis often sea buckthorn preparations are recommended for the treatment. In addition, the power of the yellow sea buckthorn juice berry has recently been used in cosmetic products such as face cream, body lotion or bath oil.

Sea buckthorn oil protects against sun exposure and helps to prevent premature aging of the skin. It is used primarily for products for mature skin. The rich oil is particularly suitable for people with very dry, rough, flaky skin. In spite of all its miraculous powers, the sea buckthorn berry unfortunately also has a catch: because the spiny shrubs are difficult to harvest, real sea buckthorn products are usually relatively expensive.
