Almost everyone has once tried the famous calf fever wrap. In simple conditions such as colds, rewinds are an effective way to activate the body's forces. In contrast, a quark wrap can be used to treat various skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, sunburn or insect bites. He has also proven himself in throat infections and breast infections of nursing mothers. Here are some useful tips on how to properly wrap and a small selection of applications.

Wrap as a great-grandmother's home remedy

Vinzenz Prießnitz (1799 - 1851) and Sebastian Kneipp (1821 - 1897) have used wounds - for larger body areas and compresses for individual body parts - in their natural history medicine very successfully. In the "classic" Prießnitz wrap, which is applied in the case of a sore throat, a thin cloth is dipped one-third into cold water and put together so that the wet-cold side comes to lie on two dry layers. The wet side is now placed on the front neck and fixed with a dry cloth. The wrap cools and relieves pain.

Original Kneipp wraps consist of three different wipes, the wet linen cloth for the inside, a cotton cloth as an intermediate layer and a woolen cloth as an outer fabric. There are different sets in the pharmacy, but you can also use dishes, bed linen and terry towels. Basically, one differentiates between hot and cold Wrap:

  • Hot wraps promote blood circulation and have an antispasmodic effect.
  • Cold wraps remove heat, reducing fever and relieving inflammation. They should be taken off when they have warmed up.

Wraps usually consist of an outer and an inner fabric. Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton or wool have proven themselves in the application - synthetic fabrics should not be taken, because they heat and moisture accumulate. For all diapers, warm and cold, your feet must first be warm (if necessary warm with a hot water bottle).

Very important is that the patient feels comfortable with the wrap. He must therefore not be too relaxed or too tight. In addition, the temperature must be right: excessive heat causes burns and discomfort. If the patient starts to feel cold, the reel should be removed immediately.

Calf wrap with fever - or vinegar socks

The best known of the cold diapers is the calf wrap. It helps to lower the body temperature by one degree. The important thing is that you should not use it when the patient is shivering - this is in signs that the fever is still rising. You dip a linen or cotton cloth in cold water and wring it out, it should not drip.

The cloth is tight, but not wrapped too tightly around the calf. Now comes a second, dry cloth over it. It should completely cover the lower cloth. A third woolen cloth forms the conclusion. It must not scratch the skin. Alternatively, you can also coat wool stockings. After half an hour, the reel is removed and can be re-applied after one hour, if necessary.

Instead of the wraps you can also simply use socks, which you have previously dipped in cold vinegar water. Over the wet socks then longer, dry stockings are drawn. If necessary, this treatment can be repeated two to three times.

Foot wrap in sprains, trouble falling asleep and headache

You need three not too small square cloths (about 50 x 50 cm), which are folded into a triangle. It is moistened the inner cloth, put the two dry towels over it, so that all lie one above the other. Place your foot in the middle of the inner fabric, hit the point of the cloth over the back of your foot, first hit the right, then the left corner of the foot and possibly put it under the sole of the foot, and then fold in the cloth and woolen cloth in the same way.

Wraps and compresses for colds

In case of congested bronchi, this application supports self-healing: Dip a cotton cloth (about 40 x 190 cm) in hot water, wring it out and then wrap it tightly around the upper body - from the armpits to the lower ribs. Over it comes a shawl and finally a woolen cloth. As long as the wrap is warm, you leave it lying (usually about 30 minutes).

Attention: In case of fever do not use the chest wrap.

If the cold has settled in the sinuses, a wrap with healing clay or flaxseed can provide relief. Add two to three teaspoons of healing clay to warm water. Instead of healing clay, use five tablespoons of flaxseed on two cups of water to cook the flax seed until it is soft. Spread the slightly cooled porridge evenly on a cloth, cover it well with another cloth and lay this compress on the nose area for about twenty minutes. The heat promotes blood circulation and thus supports healing.

Wraps in joint complaints: healing earth or mustard flour

Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, affects many people. Instead of strong painkillers, more and more proven home remedies are used to help relieve the symptoms. Thus, the active ingredients of healing earth under a wrap unfold particularly well: It mixed with healing earth with water, so that a spreadable paste is created, this thicker on the painful areas and wrapped around the joint with a damp cloth over a cotton cloth and at the end the woolen cloth are wrapped. The wrap can stay on the skin for one to two hours, then the healing clay starts to dry.

Not suitable for acute inflammation, but for chronic pain: mustard flour. The one buys in the pharmacy: three to four tablespoons of black mustard flour with warm to hot water (maximum 60 degrees) stir, apply this mush on a gauze bandage or cotton cloth and cover with another gauze bandage - this mixture must not directly on the skin, it fire! This wrap comes on the skin and is covered well with another cloth. After 10 to 15 minutes, this wrap should be down again. Even with lumbago, nerve or headache, sciatica or rheumatism, this method has been proven.

Envelopes and wraps for abdominal discomfort

Sebastian Kneipp has used the body wrap for all complaints about the stomach and intestines, which often brings enough relief. A warm wrap around the stomach, which can be soaked with oils such as lavender, olive or castor oil, helps with bloating, diarrhea, nausea and sleep disorders. A warm loin wrap is suitable for kidney and bladder infections. A cold wrap should be used in case of constipation.

The knowledge of the simple home remedies such as wraps and compresses has indeed decreased with the triumph of drug therapy, but is increasingly supported by doctors of all disciplines. In many cases, for example, folk high schools offer "wrapping courses" in which you will not only get the correct wrapping technology but also all sorts of useful tips.

All in all, it can be said: Wickel could be used - in addition to traditional or naturopathic methods - even in serious diseases. However, it is important that the patients and their caregivers do not overestimate their medical competence and always consult the doctor if the course of the disease is unclear.
